Cats will bite for a number of reasons. For the most part, cats will probably bite as either a form of play or as a way to say "enough!" Cats that start off biting out of play, though, can start biting for a number of other reasons, so you will need to stop this behavior as soon as possible.

The best way to stop a cat from biting is to discourage it during kittenhood. However, not all people have that option. No matter what age the biting behavior starts to surface, you need to do what you can to stop biting as soon as possible.

Most people will tell you to avoid using your hands and feet to play with your cat, as this encourages biting behavior. However, some cats just attack those tempting toes anyhow.

A playful bite from a kitten can be cute, and most cats learn quickly the difference between a hard bite and a gentle bite. However, no biting is more acceptable.

If your cat or kitten is biting when you are playing, you can easily redirect the behavior to a toy. This will teach your cat what is appropriate for biting, and people are not appropriate toys to bite.

If redirection does not work, you need to give out a howl when your cat bites you, even if it does not hurt. Then pull your hand back and let it go limp while turning your back on and ignoring your cat. Soon your cat will get the message that biting hurts. This is how kittens learn that the biting is unacceptable among one another, so use your knowledge of cat language and behavior to your advantage. Make sure that other members of your family do this, too. Cats are pretty smart, and they may learn that they cannot bite you, but they may decide that other people are okay if everyone is not consistent.

If your cat is biting objects, tearing them apart, you can use citrus sprays to discourage the temptation to bite. Remember, cats do not like the smell or taste of citrus, so they will not be as tempted to attack something with the odor.

However, if that does not work, you can always rely on that spray bottle filled with water.
