Fiat is thinking about developing a range of cars that offer motorists ultra-low carbon emissions in order to compete with its rivals.

The car firm wants vehicles that will represent competition for Volkswagen's BlueMotion and Ford's Econetic models, according to WhatCar.com.

According to data firm JATO Dynamics, Fiat was recently found to already have the most fuel-efficient range of cars in Europe .

Currently, the company sells one type of low CO2 model, the Bravo Eco, but has announced that it will reveal its new environmental policies later this year.

Lorenzo Sistino, head of Fiat's car division, said: "We are talking about making rivals to Econetic and BlueMotion. We have technologies capable of reducing emissions. If we can provide environmentally clean cars at the same price as other models, it is bound to benefit our image."

Meanwhile, AutoExpress.com reports that huge demand for green models means that some customers are facing long waits for their eco-friendly vehicles.

Luxury and performance cars have traditionally had the longest waiting lists but as fuel prices rise further, eco models are gaining in popularity and are becoming increasingly harder to buy.

There is up to a nine month delay for the Volkswagen Polo BlueMotion, while green car insurance customers hoping to get a Honda ES-spec Civic face a 20 week wait.

However, a Volkswagen spokesman told the website that the national average is closer to 27 weeks.

Auto Express claims that the Toyota Prius hybrid is one of the safest options for green car insurance customers as there is currently only a three-week wait for delivery.
