Developing a Stronger Vocabulary for WorkDonovan Mansfield ![]() It does not matter what kind of job you have because communication skills are essential in every place of employment. Dockworkers need to be able to communicate with each other to avoid accidents. Publishers need to be able to communicate revision suggestions. Doctors need to be able to explain procedures to patients. A person would be hard pressed to find a job that did not rely on effective communication skills. It does not take someone long to realize that the stronger communication skills an individual possesses, the better chance he or she has at rising through the ranks of the company. Even if a person exhibits all of the mandatory knowledge needed to become a manager, he or she may still be passed over for the promotion because he or she does not posses the proper tools needed to manage. The most important tools for a manager are dependability and the ability to communicate effectively. Management has to deal with a variety of people in different departments, serving in various capacities, every day. Owners and Executive Management must be able to depend on a restaurant manager must talk to servers, hosts, cooks, owners, distributors, customers, and a variety of other people. If a person lacks strong communication skills, he or she will find day-to-day communications highly problematic and will most likely loose his or her position. A good way to improve communication skills is to strengthen one's vocabulary because words are the building blocks of successful communication. The broader a vocabulary one has, the better opportunity one has at doing his or her job with precision. The exact word can replace awkward and lengthy word phrases and explanations saving a good manager more and more time through out the workweek. When working a full time job, it is difficult to find time to return to school to develop a stronger vocabulary. Employees have little time to do laundry after work, let alone study books and attend classes. However, there are other options out there. A good solution is to buy audio CDs that help one learn while he or she does other things like cook, drive, or do that laundry that they have been putting off all week. For example, Verbal Advantage offers several sets of vocabulary building CDs for consumers. They offer a program called the "Verbal Advantage Success Edition" that caters to helping people develop effective professional communication skills. They also offer CD sets that help build grammar and writing skills as well as traditional vocabulary building tools. Furthermore, they cater their products to different needs, meaning they have products made especially for professionals, students, and for people who want to develop communication skills for their personal and family interactions. Regardless of the reason for investigating vocabulary and communication development, one thing is quite clear, the better one communicates, the more opportunities he or she will have in life. Try improving your vocabulary and see for yourself, I do not doubt that you will quickly realize
