Skunks: Beware the Spray
Dennis Paguio ![]() ![]() Dennis Paguio t is one of the worst things that could ever happen to your camping trip. You're walking back to your car to get your stuff and from out of nowhere you get blasted by a foul and fetid liquid all over your clothes and body. You pause to look around at whatever in the world just hit you, when you see a black and white figure prancing away while you just stand there smelling like rotten eggs, garlic and burnt rubber. So much for good clean fun. You, my friend have just been victimized by the little creature we all know as the skunk. But what's the secret of this foul brew? The really disgusting part about it is that it comes from the anal gland-yes, you heard it right, you've just been shot at from the ass. Skunks have two of these glands from either side of the anus and they use these to ward off anything from bears to dogs to humans. These glands produce a mixture of sulfur-containing chemicals like methyl and butyl thiols that when used together can ward off even the most determined attacker (and can be very hard to remove from clothes). Even Charles Darwin noted the amazing power of the skunk when he proclaimed that the animal moved around with absolutely no fear for its life because of the foul smelling defenses that it had. They although have ammunition for about five to six uses before they run out and it usually takes about ten days to produce another supply. They can even spray it from 7 to 15 feet, making you a prime target if you're anywhere near that range. Getting sprayed by a skunk is very much a nasty occurrence and people go to great lengths just to remove a scent that seemingly can't be removed. If you're wondering how in the hell to remove an left by getting blasted by a skunk's behind, go to: http://www.howtogetridofstuff.com/odor-removal/how-to-get-rid-of-skunk-smell.
