Just when you thought that you were completely safe inside your house, you'll soon discover that no matter how great your security systems are you're never completely safe from one of the most harmful elements of modern living there is. What are they? Rats of course! Ever since being the ultimate death-dealing vectors in the black plague, which brought much of Europe to its knees, rats have been a constant danger and nuisance to humans.

And although humanity has gone a long way since the days of the plague, a lot of people still get sick and die every year from rat-related causes. And here are some of the diseases that rats can carry:

Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium: This is a disease very similar to typhoid though it is not usually fatal and is not as serious as typhoid. Nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps and diarrhea are the most usual and obvious symptoms of this disease. Although not normally fatal, the very young, very old or those who have vulnerable immune systems are the ones most at risk from this disease.

Rat Bite Fever- commonly known as RBF, this is a bacterial illness you can get from being bitten or scratched by a rat or by ingesting food contaminated with rat feces.

Murine Typhus- this is a disease that occurs worldwide and can usually be gotten from rat fleas. You're usually more at risk from murine typhus in the warmer months or if you live in warmer and more humid environments.

Leptospirosis- this is a serious bacterial disease that can affect animals and people. Caused by the bacteria of the genus Leptospira, it has various potential symptoms with other patients sometimes not even feeling symptoms at all. But for those who do, severe headache, chills, high fever, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea and rashes may occur. If not treated, the patient may develop meningitis, kidney damage, liver failure or other symptoms which sometimes lead to death.

These are but a few of the many nasty diseases rats can give you. So if you'd like to be safe from all these and want to find a way to get rid of rats and other harmful pests, be sure to visit: how to get rid of stuff.
