Dennis Paguio ![]() ![]() Dennis Paguio You've seen people using brooms all your life and perhaps more often you see other people use them. And because of this familiarity people usually don't realize what a huge fixture the broom has been in many cultures throughout history. Actually the lowly broom is one of the most innovative things ever created for hygiene and cleaning purposes. Its simple design of stiff fibers attached to a cylindrical handle is so effective that a lot of people still opt to clean their houses or roofs or yard with it, in spite of the technical advantages offered by technologically superior items. And because of its versatility and simplicity, the broom has garnered a lot of popularity through history. Perhaps the most popular association that brooms have is to witches. And in spite of the connection with brooms to women, the first with who admitted to flying on one after applying magical ointments was in fact a man. Guillaume Edelin admitted this in 1453 although there had been prior records of witches using brooms or other items to fly in the past. Witches have also been known to diguise their wands as brooms or to use them as receptacles to temporarily house certain spirits. Brooms have also been hung on doors as symbols of purification to all those who enter. In the Bible, the Gospel According to Luke mentions the broom as a symbol of woman's work. Poets like Emily Dickinson have used brooms to create various metaphors. The broomstick takes center stage in some form or another, in the fictional works of JK Rowling and Arthur C. Clarke. Even the navies of many countries have the tradition of lashing a broom to the mast or highest antenna of the ship when returning in order to symbolize that they have made a 'clean sweep of the seas'. So the next time you use the broom to perform any of the tasks you normally do with it, remember to look at it with respect as hundred of years of tradition has venerated it and left it virtually unchanged over time.
