Believe it or not one of the greatest inventions in the world without which it would never be the same is the underrated garbage bag. It is one of the greatest providers of convenience in these modern times because it allows for easy and convenient waste management. With the garbage bag, the collection, segregation, classification and storage of trash becomes a very easy issue to manage. Without these handy objects the difficulties of waste-disposal would be catastrophic as there are very few, if any alternatives to the all-around benefits that a garbage bag gives.

And we all owe it to Mr. Harry Wasylyk of Winnipeg for this invention. After the Second World War, he began the fruitful task of experimenting with a new material called polyethylene. After creating his first bags in his own kitchen, he sent them to the Winnipeg General Hospital for a trial run to line their garbage cans. He moved his kitchen production to a plant after that and he didn't look back. And at the same time, an employee from Ontario's Union Carbide plant began making garbage bags for the plant. Union Carbide loved the idea and bought Harry Wasylyk's business. They began to make good garbage bags from leftover polyethylene resin up at the Montreal plant. And also at around the same time (roughly the 1950s) another Canadian inventor named Frank Plomp of Toronto was also working on a similar concept.

The world truly owes the great state of Canada for this wonderful invention. Though there are new problems concerning the biodegradability and decomposition of the garbage bag at this point in time, it remains one of the landmark inventions that not many people realize changed the world mostly for the better.
