Repainting The Town: Getting Graffiti Out of Your Crib's Wall
Dennis Paguio ![]() ![]() Dennis Paguio Living in a tough neighborhood can mean that you're exposed to graffiti every day. Graffiti, if you aren't familiar with the term, is the word used to classify words and images scrawled, drawn or painted on any piece of property. And though some graffiti can be considered by people to be great political statements or examples of subversive/anti-establishment art, it's very rarely flattering to have graffiti, especially if the property in question is your house. I live in a tough neighborhood. It's seen all kinds of graffiti from over the decades and my wall has definitely fallen victim to the assault. Actually through research I learned that graffiti has been in existence since ancient times with such civilizations as Ancient Greece and The Roman Empire having good amounts of graffiti on their walls as well. Caricatures, poetry and obscenities have all been graffiti standards since the beginning of civilization. Although I didn't have to deal with any Ancient Greeks or Romans, I did have to get past the two decades of activism and public unrest known as the 60s and 70s. Back then, graffiti was synonymous with punk culture. You could see logos of bands like Black Flag everywhere. And then the hip hop fever reached new unprecedented heights. That meant more graffiti for all of us. I learned that not having the money for complicated treatments meant that I had to discover new ways to prevent my house from being violated. Installing emergency and anti-trespassing systems did the job decently well. And the existing graffiti I just painted over. I really think painting over it is the easiest way to get rid of graffiti and it works no matter how old the design is. Graffiti like that on private property is most usually considered illegal.
