It really depends on how much patience you have and what you know about how to potty train a puppy.

4 Points To Potty Training Your Puppy

All dog owners like us have been through the same experience. How do you communicate to your puppy, which has no idea what you are on about, where the correct place(s) and incorrect places are for it to relieve itself?

It is very common amongst dog owners, especially newbies, to install the incorrect kinds of training method in their puppy which inevitably extends the training process when it need not be. Owners, by using some patience and regularity could save themselves lots of stress and lots of puddles, or worse!!!

Point 1. Do Not Pee Where You Sleep!!

It is inbuilt in animals in general not to go soiling the area in which they are going to be eating and sleeping. No puppy wants to be playing or eating in the same area as they have just been for number 1's or number 2's. To avoid accidents it is therefore a good idea, when you cannot supervise your puppy to keep it in a confined area where it has maybe eaten or played regularly. This will naturally make the puppy want to "hold on" unless it is really bursting.

Point 2. Early Morning Excitement

When you first get up and go downstairs to your puppy try to avoid getting it over excited for a bit until such time as you have taken it to the area you want your puppy to use. Two advantages here are that it does not lose control and urinate as it sees you, which can cause a difficult situation, which we won't go into here and you can then give it loads of praise once it has been in the correct area which will cause the puppy to remember that it is praised on seeing you in the morning once going to the toilet in the correct place.

Point 3. Consistent Use Of The Same Command

On taking your puppy out to wherever you are potty training it make sure that you use the same command every time to take your puppy to the same spot i.e. "go toilet". This will reinforce the same reaction everytime the puppy here's the command. Also, dogs are very sensitive to tone, therefore try and use the same voice tone each time. As for all dog training this makes training so much easier.

Point 4. Tred The Same Path To Relief!!

Pick a route outside that you will lead your puppy on to the potty training area and stick to this path each and every time you go there. Again, this will reinforce what is required of your puppy and reduce the potty training time. All puppies/dogs are creatures of habit, stick to habits and you will have a much happier adult dog.

Point 5. Praise, Praise and Praise Again

Another way to reduce the time it takes potty train a puppy and train it at anything else is to give it loads of praise once it has done what you want it to do. A dog is happy when it knows where it stands, packleader status etc and naturally wants to please you so make sure "praise my puppy" is ingrained in your memory. Another tip is that praise only works at the point of impact i.e. do not wait until you are doing something else before praising your puppy as it will not associate it.
