Dog aggression in itself is a very complex subject as it can happen for many many reasons. Therefore pinpointing how to correct aggression in a dog often means finding out more about the case in question along with the dog's history.

Below I have highlighted some areas as to why a dog becomes aggressive in order that you can see whether you might need to focus here to see how to correct aggression in your dog.

Territory Related Dog Aggression

The most common type of dog aggression is one based around "territorial aggression". As we live so closely these days with dogs we need them to express a calmness about themselves and not to dominate their territory that they live in. Please note that territorialism is a natural instinct within a dog and therefore can be overcome with the correct training and application. A dog will defend its home to ensure others realise that this is its territory.

Travelling Aggression behavior

You may see signs of aggression in your dog whilst it is in your car travelling along the road. It may consistently bark all the time, as it passed things that it sees, which is very annoying. Again this is a type of territory aggression whereby your dog is telling people to stay out of its space as they are not welcome there. If you are stationary it is unlikely that anybody will come to your car at this point which leads the dog into thinking it has succeeded in its quest to protect its territory. This may be followed by barks of joy from your dog.

Do you Shout Back At Your Dog?

If your dog is misbehaving or someone calls at the door have you ever shouted at your dog and told it to "be quiet"? If you have then all you are really doing is actually reinforcing the aggression within your dog as it thinks you are joining in and therefore condoning its behavior. Not the correct one of dealing with it.

Dog Aggression Through Isolation

If you ever have someone round your house that is not comfortable with your dog do you shut it in another room on its own? This may seem like a sensible idea in the circumstances but what you are actually doing is preventing your dog from seeing the person in its own territory and therefore eliminating one of its senses, its sight.

The dog is restricted to only being able to smell the person which will only result in heightened aggression and frustration behavior probably resulting in persistent barking. As I mentioned earlier dog aggression and how to correct dog agression is a very broad subject which I have only touched on here.
