Is your pet biting and scratching themselves until their hair thins and their skin gets inflamed? Is your pet chewing and biting at the base of their tail? If so, they're probably infested with ticks and/or fleas. If that's the case, you can be sure you have many, many more inside your house in the form of eggs and larvae if your infested pets are allowed inside.

So you may ask, what do I do to get rid of these pesky devils? To really get rid of ticks and fleas, you have to be pretty diligent. First you have to vacuum your house daily for several days and then treat your house with either a fogger, spray or carpet powder to kill any remaining eggs or larvae. It's best to consult with your veterinarian for options on the right product to use.

Next, you have to treat your pets by either getting them dipped, using a monthly application, shampoo or collar. There are many safe and effective products to choose from but here again, it's important that you consult your vet as some products are safe for dogs, but not safe for cats.

Then you have to treat outside including your patio or lanai and your yard. Remember to treat any dog pens, dog houses and external pet beds, too. Stir up any standing debris in your yard before treating it. Fleas and ticks love moist and shady areas so by stirring these up, the killing agent will be better able to attack them. You'll want to use a product that's environmentally safe as well as veterinarian approved.

Of course while doing all these treatments, you'll need to manage your pets. Once the inside of your house is treated, including the garage, your pets can't come in until they've been treated themselves. Once they've been treated, they can't go outside until the yard and patio are treated. Thanks goodness for locking pet doors!

Be sure to wash all the pet beds and treat all dog crates, dog carriers, cat carriers, pet strollers or anything your pets spend time in. After all this, keeping those pesky critters out is also important as who wants to go through all that again, right?

Monthly applications of vet recommended inside, outside, and on your pet treatments should keep you and your furry friend happy and comfortable.
