Michael Angelo Massa, J.D. Unverified Account

ST. CLAIRSVILLE, Ohio (July 14, 2008) It has been twenty years since Ohio University alumnus Michael Massa designed the official Belmont County seal after writing the Belmont County Commissioners and asking why the county did not have one. An original copy of the seal he then designed is now prominenently hanging in the lobby of Ohio University's Eastern Campus, located in Belmont County.

According to the state's website, Massa was a law student working for the state of Ohio when he designed three seals. The people of Belmont County then voted for the best one. "The winning design shows the sun rising over the Belmont County Courthouse cupola. From the central sun emanate nine rays toward the perimeter of the seal, ending at nine white stars." The number nine symbolizes Belmont County's role as the ninth parcel to be incorporated into the Ohio Territory, via the Northwest Ordinance, according to Massa. "For 50 years, Ohio University Eastern Campus has been providing higher education opportunities to the residents of Belmont County. We are honored to have an original copy of the seal hanging in our lobby that symbolizes our historical roots and the great beauty of our hills and river," said Dr. Rich Greenlee, interim campus dean. "We are particularly proud that the seal was designed by one of our former students, Michael A Massa." Massa grew up in St. Clairsville. He took courses at the Eastern Campus before relocating to the Athens campus. He currently lives in Columbus. He has a law degree and owns his own marketing firm. He is also an adjunct professor in law and education at several universities around Columbus.
