If you have ever wondered if medical transcription jobs are legitimate, I can tell you they are. It is not a get rich quick job but a career. A lot of people think that if you can type and spell well that you can do medical transcription, but there is more to it than that.

One requirement is to take a medical transcription course which is necessary in order to learn the correct terminology that goes into a medical report. The transcription course will also include learning about anatomy, physiology, and other medical specialties. If you have already had some experience working in some capacity in the medical field, you may only need a medical terminology course, but it would benefit you to take a complete course.

In recent years clinics, hospitals, and other healthcare providers have had the capability of hiring medical transcriptionists from all over the world that can work from their own home. With the internet, medical dictation can be downloaded, transcribed, and then submitted back to the healthcare provider. No matter where you live, in a big city or a small town, you can still do medical transcription from your home.

A beginning medical transcriptionist can sometimes find it hard to work from home immediately as there will still be some on the job training necessary. That is why some new MTs try to get some experience first with a clinic or hospital in their own area so they can work in-house for awhile until their confidence builds up and they feel more comfortable working alone. Finding another medical transcriptionist to be a mentor will also help when first starting out.

On the internet you can find medical transcription chat rooms and forums that can help a lot with difficult terms, finding the right job, etc. Also, some people have a hard time adjusting to working at home and welcome the chance to chat with others in the profession so they won't feel so isolated.

There are some start up expenses in becoming a medical transcriptionist. The MT course will be the biggest cost ranging anywhere from $500.00 to over $3,000.00. The more expensive schools usually have more extensive training and some will help you get your first job. An MT course is usually offered at community colleges also. Some schools offer payment plans and others require the total amount up front. You need to shop around to find the one that meets your financial situation.

Some other expenses involved is a computer, transcription equipment (between $150.00 and $450.00), a medical dictionary, and a pharmaceutical word book. Sometimes these two books are included in the course.

If you are thinking of having a legitimate job working from home, this may be the career you are looking for.
