Why Am I So Scared Of Flying?

Something rather bizarre has happened to me over the last few years, I have suddenly become scared of flying. For many years I was quite a confident flyer but that has now all changed and in this article I will write about my present day fear and phobia of flying on an aeroplane, explaining about my pre-flight and on-flight thoughts. I hope you enjoy the read.

I have just returned to the UK from Lanzarote. In the two weeks that I was on holiday there were numerous incidents involving aeroplanes including the Madrid disaster. We have all heard the experts stating that air travel is the safest form of travelling, while I am sorry but I just do not believe that anymore. How often do you hear about massive accidents involving cruise liners. Even if there is a problem with one of these cruise liners you have every chance of getting home in one piece, without too much truama. Any type of problem on a plane is very scary and often ends in a huge loss of life.

As you can see from the above I have a severe lack of confidence in air travel and these days with the credit crunch I am often left wondering just how many corners are being cut. Virtually all, if not all, airline companies are struggling in a big way. Many have folded in 2008 alone.

My journey starts as I enter the airport, is there any delay? If there is, why has the plane been delayed? I then watch as the aeroplane finally arrives, but wait after only thirty minutes we are boarding the plane, surely this is far too quick. I do not mind a delay, I just want to get home safely.

As I board the plane I start to look around for terrorists! Yes I am aware this is quite bizarre, as I have no idea what a terrorist would look like in any case.

The take off scares the hell out of me, just get off the ground I am thinking as the plane speeds down the runway.

Once in the air I find myself constantly looking at the air stewards and air stewardesses, if they look panicked then there is surely something to worry about. I listen to each and every noise and constantly chack for any smells of smoke etc.

Then there is the landing, nice and smooth please. I do believe in God and speak to him on a regular basis during the flight.

OK, you may well think I am nuts but this is how it is for me.
