How To Overcome A Speech Impediment (Stuttering)

Joe Biden has stated that he has managed to overcome a speech impediment. He had a stutter when he was younger but has been able to eradicate it from his speech and is now able to talk fluently. It is reported that around one percent of the population have a stutter and hearing yet another person openly talk about how they have been able to achieve fluency will give these people great hope for the future.

When searching for information about stuttering people will often receive mixed messages. People like Biden will talk about how they have cured their stutter whilst on another website it will state that you can not overcome a stutter. Unfortunately there is a lot of rubbish written about the whole subject of stuttering which is normally on blogs written by people who have a stutter themselves. It is as if they are jealous about the people who have managed to achieve fluency.

Instead of feeling jealous perhaps they could learn about how these people did manage to stop stuttering and about the character required to achieve fluency. To become more positive would be a good starting point. In reality these people have perhaps just become disillusioned with life after receiving a poor standard of treatment by the traditional speech therapists. I personally believe that these types of people should keep their own frustrations to themselves. Just because they have been unable to overcome their stutter, for whatever reason this might be, does not mean that they should discourage other people from doing so.

There are numerous forms of treatment out there for people who are interested in overcoming their stutter. These range from one-to-one speech courses to self-help e-books and DVD's.

Whichever form of stuttering therapy a person decides to take up will require their full commitment and dedication. It is far from easy to overcome a stutter and their is no quick fix. It requires patience, hard work, practice and a positive attitude.
