Data Duplication and Compression an Australian FirstRob Best ![]() Not many Australian companies have cracked into the world of data storage and compression, but Rocksoft based in Adelaide Australia is set to revolutionise the data storage, backup and compression industry. The company has achieved startling data compression rates by examinig data at file, block and sub-block levels and identifying redundant elements. A process it calls redundant data elimination (RDE). By treating data as " binary large objects" and taking a macro view of some very micro data, they can look at patterns of data across files rather than just discrete packets of information. Their software extracts parts of data present in multiple locations, stores only the unique data, then recombines files when users access them. The result is a considerable saving in storage and reduced bandwidth usage. This technique provides an amazing 30% reduction for already compressed files like MP3's and on the average laptop or notebook can reduce your overall data storage by 60% and do it faster than conventional software compression programs without the need to uncompress. It's amazing how much data repetition there is in our files, from the headers and footers, to common text patterns, file structures and more; this technique of compressing data is not only elegant and simple, it's revolutionary. No wonder then that Rocksoft was acquired by ADIC who in turn was acquired by the giant compression company Quantum so they could get their hands on these very impressive data compression methods. Keep an eye out for Quantum's new DXi3500 and DXi5500 appliances and their brand new GoVault (an SME backup product) that all use these new methods of compression, I think they might just take the market by data storm.
