When I opened a gift basket business, My Fast Basket Company, I set upon the task to prepare a gifting calendar and to do this I needed to research dates of note and what types of annual celebrations we observe. I realized there are many, many reasons to celebrate and they're not just birthdays and anniversaries. There are national and regional days of observance and dates to honor our favorite people or events. Some are truly amusing like Cow Appreciation day. Yes, there really is a Cow Appreciation Day to honor our bovine friends. I found a National Kids Day (which I'm embarrassed to say I never knew about). Sorry Kids! There's a Truck Drivers Appreciation Day and Grateful Dead fans abound in celebration of Jerry Garcia's birthday.
How did I actually get interested in all this? Well, as I routinely updated my web site to keep it current with the holiday schedules, I soon found all kinds of interesting dates and days of observance. The first one I ran across was Cow Appreciation Day, as previously mentioned, and I have to admit it peaked my interest.
Do we as Americans celebrate all animals or just cows? Well, I did find animals being honored like feral cats and sea monkeys. There have to be others. So I started to research other national dates of observance I realized Americans can find a reason to celebrate or offer appreciation for almost anything. True Statement folks! From Elvis Presley to the Wright Brothers of flight there's a special day set aside for some very unusual things. I thought I would compile a list of some of the more amusing ones that I stumbled upon here.
