This acute dearth of hotel rooms is not really music to the ears as only some 700 days are left for the commonwealth games to begin. There is a shortage of around 40000 rooms in Delhi and the National Capital Region. It is the budget travelers coming to Delhi who faces the maximum heat of this crunch. It seems the government has finally woken up and decided do to something for the budget travelers. The Ministry of Tourism said that a subsidy would be offered to private sector builders for constructing budget hotels in one, two and three star categories. In fact there is a plan to provide a 10 year Tax rebate to new budget hotels in Delhi and Delhi National Capital Region. The Delhi government also plans to start a new category of Budget accommodation in in the form of bed-and-breakfast schemes. The neighboring states of Delhi are also taking bold initiatives in this direction. The "Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority" has recently invited tenders for setting up budget hotels in the "Greater Noida" area of UP, a 30 kilometer drive from the heart of Delhi . All said and done the government must act fast so that when the game kicks of on October 3rd the tourists should not be left high and dry.
