We are now living in the age of the Internet. We can do virtually anything and everything on the World Wide Web. Online shopping is on the increase and figures predict that this year 65% of us will shop online this Christmas. How does our shopping get to us? By courier of course.

To meet demand, the number of courier companies out there is on the increase. As consumers and retailers we are now faced with a diverse, competitive range of options when it comes to our couriers. So how do we know who stands out from the others?

The natural instinct when choosing your courier is cost. But remember, the cheaper isn t always the better. A retailer should consider their customer when it comes to delivery times. Do they only deliver during the day, or will they extend to evening and weekend delivery times when the customer isn t at work?

The next thing to consider is the length of time it will take for your consignment to reach its destination. Delivery times are critical, especially at high-pressure times of the year like Christmas. Make sure that your courier offers you a good level of service not only on the road, but also in terms of customer service and how they deal with your queries and complaints.

Added value is an important aspect of any contract or purchase, and it s no different with your courier. How does your courier stand out from the crowd? What is their unique selling point or USP?

Is your courier accessible? Can you contact them on the phone at any given hour, or can you access an online booking and tracking system to book and track the delivery of your consignment? Do they use the latest GPS tracking technology to keep you up to date with your delivery?

How far will your courier actually go? If you need to send a parcel from London to New York will your courier take it all the way or will they deliver to the airport and then sub contract the shipping overseas?

In summary, ecommerce retailers have to have reliable courier service to take care of their deliveries. The obvious factor when deciding on a courier company is cost, but other areas such as innovations, carbon neutral compliance, online booking and tracking tools and customer service and commitment are all equally as important when it comes to getting value for money.
