Features and benefits of SDLT Super DLT tape media formatShawn Paul ![]() Tape4Backup The Super DLT tape is the new extended version of the DLT (Digital Linear Tape). The SDLT tape has multi track and linear data recording mechanism. The first generation of the SDLT tape drive provided native capacity of 160GB and compressed 320GB capacity. The capacity of the 2 nd generation of Super DLT tape was raised to 300GB (native) & 600GB (compressed rate). The SDLT-II tape drives are backward read compatible (dependent on drive) with the data tapes recorded on DLT-8000, DLT-7000, DLT-4000, and SDLT tape drives of first generation and VS series. It provides a natural path for migration to the users of the older DLT tape versions who want to upgrade. The SDLT tape has powerful and advanced features to facilitate its users. Several advancements have been made and new features added in the Super DLT tape format in comparison to its predecessor Digital Linear Tape format. SDLT tape format has enhanced tape formulations, channel recording technologies and head design. New technology " L aser G uided M agnetic R ecording LGMR" is incorporated in the SDLT tape format. By the LGMR technology, both the technologies of magnetic and optical are combined. So, as a result high storage capacity is enabled on half inch data tape cartridge. The data in SDLT tape cartridge records magnetically on tape's recording side. The tape's backside is the non recording side on which servo optical tracks are embedded that help in tracking. The DLT tape has the tape formulation of "Metal Particle MP", while the SDLT-1 tape format has the "A dvanced M etal P article AMP " media. SDLT 1 tape format can store high density data because of its new technology of metal particle. eMP60 formulation is utilized by the SDLT-II media therefore, it additional features than the AMP media which further enhances the performance. eMP60 technology's advancements include magnetic strength that over time limits the "magnet loss" and hence enables high recording density, The SDLT cartridge offers itself advancements to DLT data tape cartridge. The Super DLT tape cartridge has structural changes like the "structural ribbing" and "internal circular wall". Both of these structural changes protect the SDLT cartridge from potential damage if jarred or accidentally drops. When we compare the DLT and the SDLT tape format, the Super DLT backup tape format has enhanced features including the high efficiency channel of P artial R esponse M aximum L ikelihood (PRML), P ivoting O ptical S ervo (POS) and the M agneto R esistive C luster (MRC) heads. The MRC heads are densely packed therefore, they form a cluster. The benefits of this arrangement of MRC heads are increased track densities, enhanced transfer speed, more resistance to humidity and temperature. P artial R esponse M aximum L ikelihood is hard drive storage mechanism. During the read back the PRML differentiates from noise the valid signal. PRML does not look at the signal peak; instead it looks at the entire waveforms. On the hard drive, sophisticated sampling of the digital signal is employed by the PRML. PRML then processes and detects the digital signal for manipulation of the analog "data stream" that comes from the disc, this is the partial response (PR) component. PRML then determines the most suitable bits sequence and afterwards reconstructs accordingly, this is the maximum likelihood component.
