What's next for Miguel Cotto?

Almost 4 months ago, we have seen an undefeated prospect have not only his only professional loss, but his knock out loss as well. Miguel Cotto took on one of the most dangerous welterweights in the division, Antonio Margarito. Margarito came into the fight as the underdog. But boy did he prove us wrong. He was the one who came out on top of the world, by knocking out the undefeated Miguel Cotto.

Let's look at the facts of the fight. Miguel Cotto has one of the most dangerous left hooks to the body in the sport. Margarito has almost the same style as well, but he just never stops puching. He also has that iron chin of his. Cotto on the other hand, fires in spurts of cominations, and has a couple of problems with his chin as well.

The real reason that Margarito won the fight was his chin, and all the punches that he been throwing that night. This man could have thrown two-thousand punches that night, regardless of his hand speed. He was also the one who dug inside his opponent's body, while many believed that Cotto was going to do it. That didn't happen. Cotto just wanted to hit him in the head and get away as fast as possible.

The problem with that is Cotto does not have the foot speed to be able to get away from Margarito that fast. Maybe he does, but he cannot keep that going for twelve rounds.

So what's next for the Puerto Rican star? Well it has been stated that if Paul, the Punisher, Williams vacates his championship title, that Cotto will face off with Michael Jennings for the vacated title.

Me personally, I didn't even know who Michael Jennings is. I looked him up and he is from Preston, England. His last fight was on February 2, 2008 knocking out Ross Minter in the 9th round. Well, even though I looked him up, I haven't seen him fight. So really, I do ot know what type of threat he is to Miguel Cotto.

Another opponent that Cotto will probably face off with is fellow Puerto Rican, Kermit Cintron. Both of these fighters have one thing in common. They both have suffered defeats, only from Margarito. Cintron will be facing Lovemore N'dou in November. He hopes to be the first to stop N'dou. Really, I believe that's not going to happen. If Cotto, a smart and intelligent fighter who has power, could not stop Cintron, what makes you think that Cintron, despite his monster hit, would be able to stop N'dou. He's just a slugger.

Should he get past N'dou, he'll likely be able to matchup against Cotto. This would be a fight that I would like to see. Boxer vs puncher. But all around, I think that Cotto could pull this off with his intelligence in the ring and his blinding hand speed.

I know that you probably think that we are thinking a little too far but, if Cotto could get past his next opponent, he would be able to set a rematch with Margarito in June of 09. That would probably take place around the Puerto Rican Day Parade, meaning that they would probably fight in Madison Square Garden. So if Cotto is the warrior that we think he is, I do not think that he will lose in front of all those Puero Ricans.

We are thinking a little too far. We do not even know who is going to be Margarito's next opponent. Top Rank has been saying that if they do not find an opponent for Margarito in Early January, the rematch would take place as early as Febuary. I'm just dying to see that rematch, regardless of when it will take place.
