Why You Should Stretch Your Neck Muscles Before Exercising

by Vance Kardasian

Stretching basically helps keep one's muscles in shape and can help to prevent or reduce the occurrences of strained muscles as well as injuries pertaining to the muscular system. One often overlooked aspect of stretching is to stretch neck muscles. Many novices believe that the neck is not included in stretching as this may seem immobile for the most part of some exercises. One should stretch neck muscles not only in preparation of any sport or exercise but also to keep the muscle here in top condition.

The need to stretch neck muscles do not only stem from physical fitness but also a way to relieve stress on the neck muscles and on the upper back. Some people also feel especially good when their nape and neck area is massaged. Although this is not directly connected with ways to stretch neck muscles, the muscles will feel relief when massaged.

Ways To Stretch Neck Muscles

The flexion stretch of the neck is one way to stretch neck muscles especially in the back of the neck and the upper part of the back. This stretch for neck muscles entails bringing one's chin as close a possible to one's chest. Hold the position for about ten to twenty counts and then release. This stretch should be repeated for at least five times. One other way to stretch neck muscles is to do the opposite of the former stretch. To stretch neck muscles of the front neck, bend the head backwards until one achieves a stretch. Similar to the former stretch, about ten to twenty counts should do in holding the stretch and repetitions.

Some trainers also stretch neck muscles by tilting their heads to sides, sometimes with the help of a hand pulling down the head to one side. Each tilt of the head to one side should be held for about ten counts and repeated about five times for each side. Another similar way to stretch neck muscles is to turn the head to one side while the body faces front. Usually, the individual places both hands on either side of the hips and turns his or her head to the left while counting to five and then the head should stop at the original position before turning to the right for another five second hold.

These ways to stretch neck muscles are very effective in keeping the muscles in shape and on top form. These also help to ease strain when the individual has been in one position for too long like while at work.
