Dan Fletcher

Acai berries seem to be everywhere, on the television, radio, internet, and Oprah. They claim to help with weight loss, boost metabolism, and strengthen the immune system. What are the actual health benefits of this "miracle" berry? Will it really help or will it only harm the body? What makes this berry one of nature's most powerful healing foods?

Acai berries grow wild in Central and South America. For years the indigenous people have used the acai berry to help prevent diseases and fight aging. Now that the berries are available world-wide, all kinds of things are being said about them. The truth is that acai berries are a close relative of the blueberry, which is one of the top antioxidant rich foods. Acai berries are also high in antioxidants. Antioxidants are important in slowing down the oxidation process in the body, which can damage and destroy cells and tissues in the body.  Antioxidants are also important in preventing illnesses like heart disease and cancer.

Acai berries contain antioxidants like anthocyanins and flavonoids. Anthocyanins are responsible for keeping the heart healthy, and studies have shown that flavonoids may help they body to fight cancer. Another benefit of antioxidants are that they neutralize free radicals, which cause aging and diseases.

Acai berries are also rich in protein and fiber, which are both important staples in a healthy diet. The berry also has high levels of omega-6 and omega-9 fatty acids, which help protect the heart and regulate the cardiovascular system. Omega-6 and omega-9 fatty acids contained in the acai berry also help regulate and even lower the levels of cholesterol in the blood.  The high potassium content in the acai berry also helps the heart function properly, by boosting circulation and reducing blood pressure.

Another antioxidant found in the acai berry is Vitamin E.  Vitamin E is vital in repairing damages to the cells in the body caused by free radicals. Vitamin E is essential in helping blood clot properly. Taking some form of acai berries daily increases the amount of Vitamin E in the body and can help speed up the healing process of wounds.

You've probably heard about the amazing claims that have been made about using acai berries for weight loss. Unfortunately you can't believe the hype- it's unlikely that if you don't alter anything else in your life, and just start taking acai berries, that you will see any weight loss. If you exercise and eat well though, acai berries may help contribute to weight loss. This is because they help to reduce food cravings, as well as boosting the metabolism.

Acai berries are high in proteins, fibers, vitamins, and antioxidants.  They are easy to digest and easily absorbed in the body. They boost the immune system to fight against diseases and are an excellent source of heart health. The health benefits of acai berries are endless. If nothing else acai berries are a fruit and eating fruit is always a good choice for the body.
