After You Stop Drinking - How to Rebuild Your Life
by Samantha JamesAfter you stop drinking you tend to be on overwhelm. You can't decide how to go about rebuilding your life. You don't know what to do first, and at the same time you may be berating yourself for causing such a mess in the first place, when in truth you should feel good about the fact that you decided to really do something about your drinking. Not an easy thing to do, and remember, alcoholism is a disease.
When you stop drinking, you may find that you have a big void in your life. The nights seem longer. Maybe the days seem longer too. This void comes from where your drinking used to be. Drinking is very time consuming.
You will also now be feeling feelings you haven't felt in a long time. Drinking helped you chase away all of those feelings you didn't want to deal with. So now all of a sudden these feelings are there. But it's important not to make your decisions based on your emotions and let logic and common sense dictate.
You may also find you are a little clumsier when you stop drinking. That's a common side effect and if you break a few things, don't let it get to you.
The A.A. people really have a good point when they say "One day at a time". That's really the only way to do it when you are first starting over. In fact, that is good advice for anyone, drinker or not, because when you aren't worrying about the future and dwelling on the past, keeping your focus in today will result in your efforts being that much more effective.
So, where do you start? You start at the beginning. Make a list of the most important things you need to address first, and start there. Lists really help since most of us have short-term memory loss for some time. This will subside as your body heals.
Do the best you can to accomplish at least part of your list every day. Something is better than nothing, and staying busy will help you keep your mind off of things that dwelling on will only bring you down.
Before you know it, you will be surprised and pleased at how far you have come. And that will help you to feel better about yourself and build up your confidence.
You may think you will never feel good again, that those days are gone for good, but if you just keep moving forward, your life and outlook will get much, much brighter.
